The mission of an Adventurous Author is to master the art, process, and business of storytelling
while living adventurously so that you produce a steady stream of stories, recruit a rising river of readers, and sell an ocean's worth of books.
The success of this mission depends on who you believe yourself to be.
Need help believing? Then adopt The Adventurous Author Creed as your own.
I am an ADVENTUROUS AUTHOR.
I get to write novels even if no one has given me permission to write novels.
I get to make writing a priority even if I have limited time to write and no one else understands this dream.
I get to divide my year into six competitive writing seasons so that I work when it’s time to work and play when it’s time to play.
I get to believe writing novels is a challenging and rewarding grand adventure.
Writing allows me to create interesting people who dare to do things I’ve never done, I would never want to do, or I want to someday experience myself.
Writing allows me to live in the world of my imagination, express my values, and explore places I’ve never been (or that don’t exist).
Writing allows me to tell stories that connect with real people who long to escape their own ordinary worlds.
Writing is a learned process that anyone can master, but mastery does no good if I don’t also market my stories.
Marketing the stories I write is a learned skill that anyone can master.
Writing and marketing mastery is achievable and requires work.
I choose to enjoy the process of building a book readers can hold in their hands.
I choose to write every day for at least 15 minutes a day whether I feel like it or not.
I choose to let myself be lousy when getting my ideas out of my head and onto the page.
I choose share my stories with people who can make them better and accept their effective feedback while standing firm in my non-negotiable convictions.
I choose to be curious and ask questions and listen to my readers so that I am able to write stories that resonate with them.
I choose to set targets, track my projects , and make time for real-life adventures that invigorate me, challenge me, and change me.
I choose to trust God, respect my strengths, do the work my writing dreams require.
I show up and share my stories with bold confidence.
I eliminate excuses, move forward in spite of doubt, and take relentless action toward my dreams.
I do what I say and finish what I start.
